The word Gospel simply means good news and that is what we are all about. The good news of Jesus Christ, the joy and freedom we have found in knowing him and sharing the good news with others. Gospel Church is a brand new Acts 29 church in Newcastle Australia. We are a community passionate about following Christ and excited to study God’s Word in order to apply it to our lives and our culture. We are gospel-centred evangelicals who believe that the bible is God’s revealed truth, that Jesus is God and is our only hope of salvation. Because of the joy and delight we find in God, we actively share the good news of the Gospel and invite fellow Novocastrians to respond to God’s loving kindness. We are imperfect sinners, who celebrate being forgiven and adopted into God’s family.
We desire that Gospel Church’s Newcastle hub will be able to support and encourage the growth of ‘pockets‘ of gospel-loving people in rural communities.
Centred on the Gospel, Acts 29 desires to advance the mission of Jesus through obediently planting churches which in turn plant other churches. Over the last ten years Acts 29 has emerged from a small band of brothers to hundreds of churches around the world.
Acts 29 is not a model or a style. We have churches with live preaching and others with video-delivered sermons. We have independent church plants, replants, and existing churches that want to focus on planting new churches out of their existing congregations. Simply, we seek to be a movement of church-planting churches.

Gospel Pockets are a name we have coined for small gospel communities that are geographically remote, yet an integrated part of Gospel Church. Many rural communities are not large enough to support a full time pastor and yet there is a desperate need for solid biblical evangelical teaching. We want to see people in these communities growing to maturity in Christ and reaching out as ambassadors for Christ into their community.
Our idea is that as Gospel Church grows to the point that Sam is preaching regularly, these sermons will be videoed and available to the Gospel Pockets to watch together. This may be during the week or on the Sunday following the sermon in Newcastle. Each Gospel Pocket would be hosted initially in a home, and eventually lead locally by an elder.
This model differs from a traditional video or online church because each Gospel Pocket would be an integrated part of Gospel Church: structurally (coming under the authority of the elders), financially (giving to and working under a common budget) and socially (with annual visits from the lead pastor, additional visits from other pastors / elders and the opportunity to get together for teaching and fun at a common church camp). We hope that as God gives growth, we would be able to employ a pastor / elder to specifically shepherd the Gospel Pockets, including regular visits.
Gospel Church is one of the many expressions of Jesus’ body. He is the head, it is his church, he is the leader. Under Jesus’ authority Gospel Church is elder lead by Sam Swadling and Tyler Schofield.
Sam Swadling has a passionate love for Jesus and his gospel. After his love for his family, he loves church history, the beach and good coffee. Before he started planting Gospel Church Sam was the senior pastor at Singleton Baptist Church and Alice Springs Baptist Church. Sam is accredited with the Act 29 Church Planting Network and is the Regional Director for NSW.
Tyler Schofield is an enthusiastic follower of Christ with a passion for evangelism and caring for those on the fringes. Tyler is blessed to be married to Andrea who is a wonderful friend and partner in life and ministry. Tyler loves the intersection of theology and life and has a growing interest in biblical counselling. He is General Practitioner and works with all sorts of people but has a specialist interest in coming alongside struggling young people and aboriginal medicine. Tyler serves as an elder of Gospel Church having served as an elder with Sam in Alice Springs.
